Dual Coil Hot Water Cylinders are designed to be connected to two Heat Sources, typically a main Heat Source (such as a Biomass Boiler or a Heat Pump) and a Secondary Heat Source such as a Solar Thermal System.

Where the main Heat Source is Heat Pump, the main (upper) Coil in the Dual Coil Cylinder needs to be larger than if the main Heat Source is a high temperature system such as e.g. a Biomass Boiler, in order to ensure rapid reheat times as hot water is used out of the Cylinder.

While selecting a Dual Coil Hot Water Cylinder, the following factors should be considered:

(i) High Quality Stainless Steel Cylinders have a reputation for long term durability and reliabilty, and resist all forms of corrosion;

(ii) A high level of Insulation is a requirement, in order to minimise Heat Loss and to ensure a high level of performance;

(iii) The Cylinder should be freestanding, easy to handle and be supplied with all the necessary Hot / Cold Water Controls;

(iv) The Cylinder dimensions should be checked to ensure that it fits easily into the required space or area (Hot Press or Plant Room);

(v) It should have an auxiliary Backup Immersion fitted (typically 3 kW) and this should be easily accessible;

(vi) It should have Safety features such as a Safety Overheat Thermostat as well as an Operating Thermostat;

(vii) Finally, the Manufacturer's Warranty on the Cylinder should be considered. Some high quality Stainless Steel Cylinder manufacturers provide a 25 Year Warranty on the Cylinder shell, which is a strong vote of confidence in the quality and reliability of their product.
