Wood Pellet Boilers are increasingly popular in rural, suburban and urban areas where external access is available to the back of the property. A Wood Pellet Boiler works in much the same way as an oil or gas boiler, except that it uses wood pellets as its fuel type instead of traditional fossil fuels.

For Renovation or Retrofit projects, all the existing heating and hot water pipework can be used. The new Wood Pellet Boiler is simply integrated into the existing system.
Wood Pellet Boilers require a Hopper to store the pellets and to ensure that they are kept dry. The hopper is usually located in a small shed or garage, or an external Hopper can be provided. Storage space for approximately 3 tonnes of Wood Pellets is recommended for a domestic house.
Wood Pellet Boiler technology has made significant advances in recent years. Many Wood Pellet Boilers models now feature fully automated Fuel Transport (via Augers or Vacuum Feed Systems), Ignition, Burn Control, Cleaning and Ash Removal – leaving the homeowner with nothing to do but to empty the ash box from time to time.
Austria has perhaps the longest tradition of manufacturing Wood Pellet Boilers, Wood Chip Boilers and Log Boilers, with many leading international brands. Countries such as Germany, Italy, Denmark, as well as other European and North American countries also supply quality products.

Wood Pellet Fuel
Wood Pellets are considered a "carbon neutral", source of renewable energy because the carbon dioxide emitted when the wood is burned has been taken out of the atmosphere by the growing plant.

Wood Pellet Fuel
Wood Pellets are typically made from dry sawdust which is compressed into approximate lengths of 25mm and either 6mm or 8mm in diameter. Most Domestic Wood Pellet Boilers use 6mm Wood Pellets, while the Commercial sector uses 8mm Wood Pellets. Both are readily available in the United Kingdom.
Wood Pellets can be purchased in Bulk (minimum 3 tonnes) or Bagged form (e.g. 10-15kg bags). Two tonnes of Wood Pellets equates to approximately 1,000 Litres of oil, but costs significantly less. While prices vary over time, as oil becomes more expensive, a Wood Pellet Boiler should provide significant cost savings on annual energy bills.
Wood Pellet Boilers - Benefits
(i) Easy to install in a New Build or to integrate into an existing heating system (Renovation / Retrofit).
(ii) Very efficient, up to 94% of wood pellets are converted directly into heat energy.
(iii) Environmentally friendly, sustainable, “carbon neutral” fuel source.
(iv) Proven technology with many automated features, long lifespan and minimal maintenance.
(v) Significant savings on fuel when compared to fossil fuels such as oil or gas.
Wood Pellet Boilers - Considerations
(i) Do you have space available in a small shed / garage to fit a boiler and to store 3 tonnes of wood pellets (approx. 5-6 Cubic Metres)?
(ii) Is there access for a small lorry to the small shed / garage to deliver wood pellets, via the back of the house or for a delivery pipe down a side passageway?
Wood Pellet Boilers - Grants
The Renewable Heat Incentive offers an excellent financial incentive to install a Wood Pellet Boiler in your home or property.
