Flat Plate Solar Panels - On Roof
Solar thermal panels are the most popular form of solar energy used in the UK and are commonly used to provide hot water however they can also heat the home.
Developed by Hottel and Whiller in the 1950s, flat plate solar panels on the roof are the most traditional solar panels as they contain an absorber plate which runs a copper piping structure including a liquid known as glycol. The size and amount of panels will vary depending on the property and your hot water requirements but they can be installed both on the roof and in the roof.
How Does It Work?
The plates use the Sun’s heat to warm the liquid glycol in the thermal panel that is fitted on the roof. This liquid then heats the domestic hot water with the help of a hot water cylinder. Once this has heated up it is transferred via a heat exchanger. For optimum result, southerly facing roofs are best and they can even be used to heat your swimming pool.

- Provide around 70% of a household’s hot water requirements for a whole year
- Longevity- systems can last up to 20-25 years
- Payback period is around 5-8 years

- Do not require any additional materials like roof flashing
- Much cheaper than evacuated tubes and easier to clean so less maintenance
