Air Source Heat Pumps operate similarly to Water and Ground Source heat pumps except that it derives its energy from the air.
They are proving really popular across the UK given that they are a sustainable way of providing heat and hot water to a property.
The renewable energy solution can significantly reduce utility bills compared with traditional fossil fuels and they have a straightforward installation process. Various models are available through Enerfina that have a co-efficient of performance (COP) greater than four which is one of the highest on the markets.
How Does It Work?
The heat energy descends from the air which is fan assisted so it circulates quickly through an external unit. The heat is transferred to the pump via a heat exchanger and this upgrades it to a higher temperature and is used to heat water to provide the central heating.
They typically work either;
·
As one large external unit called a Mono-block type system
·
Two separate units, one internal one external
If you opt for two separate units, the internal, which will control the heat pump, will need to be connected to the external unit outside.

Types of Air Source Heat Pump
There are three main brands that supply the product and these include Mitsubishi, Viessmann and Dimplex.
(i) Easy and straightforward installation (“Plug & Play”).
(ii) Suitable for a New Build scenario. Also, very convenient to install in a Renovation or Retrofit situation. The higher temperature systems can integrate easily with existing steel radiators.
(iii) Less costly to install than Ground or Water Source Heat Pumps (typically), so payback can be achieved in a shorter timeframe.
(iv) Ideal for Urban or Suburban areas where space is limited and access to the site is restricted.
(v) Sustainable means of providing heat and hot water for your property. No fossil fuels are used as the system runs on electricity, which can be supplied (at least in part) by renewable sources such as Wind or Solar PV panels.
(vi) Very efficient means to heat your property, both from an energy and cost perspective. One kW of electricity consumed by your Air Source Heat Pump, will typically generate up to 4 kWs of heat energy.
How Do I know if it’s Right for Me?
Ask yourself the following questions; by considering the below you will be able to know if the renewable energy solution is right for you.
·
Is there an appropriate location outdoors for the external unit to be fitted; an external wall, balcony or garden?
