Cylinders which are used to store hot water for a heating system are known as Buffer Cylinders, or Buffer Tanks. These vary in size, depending on both the size of the Property to be heated and the Biomass Boiler or Heat Pump which is responsible for heating the property. Buffer Tanks
from 500L to 1,000L in size are quite common for average sized properties, depending on the renewable system or systems being installed on site.

Buffer Cylinders should be well insulated in order to conserve any heat generated while the heating system is operating, for as long as possible. For some Biomass systems such as Wood Gasification Boilers, or Multi Fuel Boilers which combine Wood Logs with Wood Pellet or Wood Chip, a Buffer Tank is strongly advised, in order to reap the maximum benefit (and the highest efficiencies) from the intense heat generated while the Wood Logs are burning.

The hot water stored in a Buffer Tank remains within the heating system, and therefore does not come into direct human contact via showers etc. The majority of Buffer Tanks are made from Mild Steel. They are protected from internal corrosion by an anti-corrosion liquid which is mixed with the water that circulates throughout the cylinder and the entire heating system.
