Wood Pellet Boilers need to have access to a dry, secure store of Wood Pellet Fuel, which provides a reliable supply of quality wood pellets, in order to be able to operate both effectively and efficiently.
Wood Pellet Fuel
In many cases, Wood Pellet Hoppers are located Indoors, in either a small shed or a garage, adjacent to the Boiler. However, in other cases, this option isn’t available, and an External Wood Pellet Hopper which can be located beside or behind the Boiler house is the most practical solution.
Wood Pellets are fed from the external Wood Pellet Hopper via an Auger or a Vacuum Feed System, in exactly the same way as they are fed from an internal storage area, into the Wood Pellet Boiler.
Wood Pellet Hopper with Auger
External Wood Pellet Hoppers will typically store 3-4 Tonnes of Wood Pellet Fuel. In certain markets (e.g. Republic of Ireland) the government provides incentives to encourage domestic customers to allow for adequate Wood Pellet bulk storage capacity. Domestic customers in Ireland require a minimum bulk storage capacity of 3 tonnes in order to qualify for a grant for a Wood Pellet Boiler.
From a Cost perspective this also makes good sense, as the Bulk Delivery Price per Tonne is significantly lower than that of Bagged Pellets.
A properly installed Wood Pellet Hopper system ensures that the pellets are kept free from Damp and Condensation while allowing for a simple and straightforward feed to the boiler. A well designed Hopper will also have a Dual Coupling System (using Cam Locks) that will allow for dust to be extracted at the same time as pellets are being blown into the hopper.
Wood Pellet Hopper Cam Locks and Dust Sock
(i) Wood Pellet Hoppers are Waterproof, Condensation free, and can be used both Externally and Internally.
(ii) Suitable for use with Auger and Vacuum Wood Pellet Feed Systems for most brands of Wood Pellet Boiler.
(iii) Many Hoppers are supplied with a Manual Discharge Valve for Bucket Filling, to provide fuel for Wood Pellet Stoves.
(iv) On some Wood Pellet Hopper models (e.g. JFC), Twin Cam Locks allow for easy access during Bulk Filling and a Detachable Filter Sock can be used to capture any dust generated during this process.
(v) Additional benefits may include features such as a Rubber Baffle to protect the pellets when Bulk Filling is taking place, a Sight Glass and Refill Order Level Plate, to help you decide when your next delivery of Wood Pellets needs to take place.
(i) Will your Wood Pellet Storage area be located inside or outside? If it's inside, do you plan to build a cement block / timber structure, or do you wish to use a ready-made Wood Pellet Hopper indoors?
(ii) Where the Wood Peller Hopper will be situated outdoors, is there a suitable area outside where the Hopper can be located?
(iii) What is the distance between your Wood Pellet Hopper and your Wood Pellet Boiler?
(iv) What type of Wood Pellet Feed System do you plan to use - an Auger Feed System or a Vacuum Feed System?
(v) Is there easy access for a Wood Pellet Delivery lorry to your Wood Pellet Hopper, so that Bulk Deliveries can be carried out without too much difficulty? Ideally, the Wood Pellet Hopper should be located less than 30 metres away from the delivery lorry.
